This was caused by making a change in the Appearance > Customise > Header
After working out it was a conflict somewhere with Woo COmmerce (disabled plugins and re-enabled one by one to determine), couldnt figure out how to fix this without help, so have deleted this instance of wordpress as removing woo commerce and the themes and starting again did not bear much fruit either.
For reference, this is the only custom CSS in use at the time:
